The Crafts Report

Coming In Our November Issue ...

  • Licensing Your Designs

"If you can't beat 'em, join 'em," that's what one artist said after she saw copies of her work in television and newspaper advertisements. (Well, that's what she said after she got over the anger and the sick stomach.) She decided that if her work was going to be copied, then she would at least make some money from it. While licensing your designs may seem unthinkable to some craft artists, with the right planning and legal knowledge, you can at least avoid getting ripped off completely. BusinessWise Columnist Barbara Brabec addresses licensing in our November issue.

  • Design a Fair Consignment Arrangement

For a retailer, every purchase comes down to dollars and cents ... what will sell and how much it can be marked up are the primary concerns. For many retailers, taking work on consignment gives them an opportunity to try something new and exciting, and often untested, in their stores. For artists, consignment can provide an opportunity to work with a gallery owner that they may not have had otherwise. The key to a successful arrangement is designing a fair contract for both artist and retailer. Grace Butland addresses consignment contracts in our November issue.

  • Booth Canopies

If you do outdoor shows, canopies are a necessity. The trick is finding the one that will meet your needs and your budget. Things to consider are set-up time, weight and transportablility, light filtration, maintenance and more. Bruce Baker adresses how to choose the one that's right for you in this month's Booth Design Column.

  • Insight

The Crafts Report's "Insight" column will focus on marketing for a different medium each month. It provides marketing tips, interesting statistical and historical facts about each medium, as well as marketing insight from the artists who work within it. The November issue will focus on Ornamental Metal.

  • REGIONAL PROFILES

Each month, we cover what's selling in a different region of the country. We'll explore opportunities for selling work including quality craft shows and galleries. We'll also feature artists from the area, particularly those whose work is strongly identified with their geographic region. This month, we'll explore selling opportunities in Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C.
