The Crafts Report

Coming In Our June Issue ...

  • Are You Ready for Wholesale?

Craft artists have made the move from retail to wholesale with varying degrees of difficulty and success. Some are approached by gallery owners, others decide to try to meet buyers through national wholesale shows. Either way, wholesaling your work requires major time and financial commitment. It requires proper planning, budgeting, ordering, scheduling and having enough hands to actually fill the orders. Are you ready for the challenge? In our June issue, we'll explore how you can rise to the occasion.

  • Booth Design: Making the Right (electrical) Connections

Recent electrical problems at a major wholesale show illustrate the need for a greater understanding of proper booth lighting and electrical requirements. Bruce Baker explores the intricacies of booth wiring in our next issue.

  • Show Alternatives: Boutique Shows Open Artists to New Markets

Are you beginning to feel the traditional retail/wholesale craft show circuit is becoming saturated? You're not alone. Many crafts professionals have turned to Boutique Shows to find new markets for their unique works of art. But the word "boutique" can mean many different things when applied to these shows. Diana Lambdin Meyer sheds some light on the subject, and hopefully, you can find the one that's right for you.

  • Insight

The Crafts Report's "Insight" column will focus on marketing for a different medium each month. This new feature, which debuted in our February 1999 issue, will provide marketing tips, interesting statistical and historical facts about each medium, as well as marketing insight from the artists who work within it. The June issue will focus on wood.

  • REGIONAL PROFILES

Each month, we cover what's selling in a different region of the country. We'll explore opportunities for selling work including quality craft shows and galleries. We'll also feature artists from the area, particularly those whose work is strongly identified with their geographic region. This month, we'll explore selling opportunities in Maine, Vermont, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Rhode Island.
