After learning about the fire that, on April 9, destroyed the Kendall Center for the Arts in Belmont, Mass., including the studios and work of 36 artists, the Craft Emergency Relief Fund (CERF) has been making efforts to assist craftspeople who suffered losses. According to CERF Executive Director Cornelia Carey, CERF has already helped one crafts-person and has been contacted by a few others for assistance. The national nonprofit organization hopes to help other craftspeople who lost studios and equipment. "We just want to remind people that help is available," says Carey.
CERF can provide no-interest loans of up to $5,000, as well as discounted or free equipment through many suppliers. "We can also help artists with booth fee waivers at some craft shows," adds Carey. In addition, CERF can help direct craft artists to other emergency relief organizations for additional assistance.
After 10 years, the Baltimore Alternative Craft Show in Maryland has closed. Show producers Genevieve Flynn and Lauren Schott made the announcement in May, saying there is no room for growth based on the show's current location and size, and without growth the show cannot go on. Flynn, a silversmith, and Schott, a jeweler, also want to spend more time on their own work.
"We made the announcement to craftspeople and buyers who attended the show last year," says Schott. "Most people understand. They have been very supportive."
Held once a year at the Hyatt Hotel alongside the American Craft Council (ACC) show, the Baltimore Alternative Craft Show began as a venue for those people who either couldn't get juried into the ACC show or were wait listed, says Schott. Over the years, the show grew into an event that featured funky, non-traditional craftwork.
