relationship with the artists as a partnership in marketing the
show," she said. "The more the artist works as our partner, the
more successful the show and the artist will be." Kloostra has a
message for all artists participating in shows: "We want to hear
from you! I have learned many artists don't realize we really want
to hear from them, and when there is a problem, the sooner the
better," she explained. "Having a problem with your freight bill?
We can intervene. Is a buyer late on an invoice? We will call,
send a letter, and if necessary, keep them out of the show. Just
ask--we are here to make artists' businesses successful!"
And according to Bernadette Boyle, marketing and public
relations manager for the American Craft Council, a big part of
success for artists at the show comes in the form of numbers of
people attending the shows. "We know a craft artist is choosing
to exhibit in our shows because they are considered one of the
most competitive the market has to offer," she said. "Because
of this, we feel an obligation to have these shows succeed
because of what is at stake: the artist's livelihood. We need to
bring masses of people through the door, but if they are not
qualified buyers, our job is not accomplished."
A Bit of Both
Sandra Magsamen has the dubious achievement of having her
feet is both worlds. She is a successful craft artist and the pro-
moter of the popular retail event The Out of Hand Show in
Baltimore, Maryland. She applies the same general philosophy
for being an artist to being a promoter. "As a promoter, my first
responsibility is to select good quality work," she said. "Our
show is known as artist made and artist driven." Magsamen
explained Out of Hand is not about making money. "We want
each artist to make money, so we pretty much break even on the
location, and provide the artists with a great space that is well
